The name Iligan comes from the ancient Higaonon language for the word ilijan, meaning “fortress of defense”. This name was given due to the frequent Moro pirate attacks and attacks of other conflicting Mindanao tribes. Iligan is home to the earliest sea dwelling settlers in the Philippines. Enforced by several Spanish era forts the city today has no remains of any due to flooding issues throughout the centuries.
