We decided to have a family day out, car packed up to the rafters and off we went. we left Shepparton on Friday lunch time straight after work and off we were heading to Apollo Bay our Destination via Melbourne. The Great Ocean road was a landscape of cliffs and pounding waves on golden deserted beaches, unusual rock formations, but also by mountains, rain forests and along rolling hillsides
After a long 4 1/2 hour 365 km drive we finally hit Apollo Bay its called by many the Paradise by the Sea, Fishing is an important local industry. The fishing fleet anchors and behind a huge breakwater and makes the daily catch available from the bright colored fishing cooperative at the entrance to the pier.
We stayed at Rayville Boat Houses this was my second stay here the last one was 10 odd years ago a nice place right on the Ocean beside the fishing pier.
Saturday morning we got up bright and early and did the following.
Cape Otway Lighthouse also know as the ‘Hope Lighthouse’ is a lighthouse in southern Victoria, Australia. It is Australia’s oldest lighthouse still in work today. it was built in 1848 and was the second lighthouse completed on mainland Australia and it remains the oldest surviving lighthouse in mainland Australia. It was decommissioned in January 1994 after being the longest continuous operating light on the Australian mainland.
Eight ships were wrecked along the coast of Cape Otway, the Americans built a radar bunker on the cape in 1942; it is now still open to the public.
Was a windy 85km 1/1/2 hour from Apollo Bay, the 12 Apostles Is a collection of limestone stacks off the shore of the Port Campbell National Park, by the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia. Their proximity to one another has made the site a popular tourist attraction. Currently there are 8 apostles left but the name remains significant and spectacular especially in the Australian tourism industry.
The apostles were formed by erosion: the harsh and extreme weather conditions from the Southern Ocean gradually eroded the soft limestone to form caves in the cliffs, which then became arches, which in turn collapsed; leaving rock stacks up to 45 metres high. Now because of this erosion there are less than 4 remaining.
Located another 30 odd klm from the 12 Apostles, we dicided to stop and have a look at this small harbour with a nice beach. we bought lunch at a Take Away fish shop and this another story later.
Upon returning late in the arvo some 200 odd km later we decided it was time to go for a paddle in the water, well swim for some hehe. The kids and the family loved the ocean as i always have even told the wife this is were i am coming to buy a house so we can spend 4 weeks a year down here. it was heaven.
Sunday morning we got up bright and early to make the grueling 360 odd klm drive back home, the Youngest twin Zoey got Sick on the way home and went off her food. the following day i fell sick also, i mean really sick i was that bad i went to the hospital as i had lost so much fluids from both ends of the body they ended up giving me an injection and it was a food bug, food bug alright this was food poisoning from the terrible food we bought at Port Campbell. the rest of the family fell sick also. So our 1-3 days back from our trip everyone was sick apart from that it was an excellent trip and wont hesitate to redo it again minus the food at Port Campbell.
