The tough-talking mayor of Davao is now the president of the Philippines. The 71-year-old is never scared about causing controversy. Or too many outsiders appear to be a thug. He admits to not using the legal system in the Philippines as it takes too long and is corrupt. To get law and order under control meant in Davao he took the situation into his own hands and he became the law and order.
The seven years I lived in Davao City. I came across the mayor many times and he would be approachable to all. But if you were a drug dealer or a thief or woman beater he would take strict action against you.
He is not a fan of Americans but is a total realist. In the need for outside management and influence to make the Philippines work. Australia almost became a major player on the internet. Of the country but got frightened off by the corruption and the time it would take to court to get anything done.
Recently Duterte made some stupid comments. About an Australian woman who got kidnapped and raped. His comments caused the Australian government to make an official complaint. His response.
“This is politics. Stay out Australian government,” tough-talking Rodrigo Duterte said. After Australia’s ambassador in Manila Amanda Gorely. Tweeted that you shouldn’t joke around about rape and murder. Also that “violence against women and girls is unacceptable, anywhere, anytime”.
No matter what you think about this man and his way of dealing with people. It can’t be untrue that he has made Davao safe for foreigners and locals alike. Yet, there is no doubt that he has passed the line many times and that is down to future generations to sort out. This generation wants him to make their country less corrupt. He has the chance and the determination to do it.
To his people, he is the king of tough talking and direct action. So it comes as no surprise that he may make comments about Australian officials. He does the same about China too. The man speaks to the average Filipino and they need to believe. That this man can make them feel good and can make them be proud again.
Mr. Duterte first told journalists. That he had a “bad mouth” but could still provide “clean government”.
Duterte said “I thought all the while I was doing my job for humanity,”.
“I do not want anybody controlling my mouth. I say what I say and I’ve said it and if it does not sit well with you, that’s your problem.”
