In the Philippines the beauty pageants are taken extremely seriously. Local and national competitions are considered a major event and the contestants give everything to winning. The girls (and boys sometimes) will try to look as sexy as possible in swimwear and in evening wear. They have practiced responses to questions and it would seem to me to be a rerun of the 1970s Miss World Competitions. It is not politically correct but here the local and international shows bring big audiences.
Something like Miss Universe or Miss World shows are still shown here. I cannot remember the last time I saw any Miss World shows on TV in the UK. It is something of a distant pass for most of the world I think. But there is no doubt the Filipino contestants are some of the most beautiful girls in the world and do not need any help with their natural beauty to shine.
During live TV events the streets will be quieter as everyone is watching TV and it is a NATIONAL event. It was Imelda Marcos that perhaps put this into the Filipino culture when she staged Miss Universe in Manila in 1974. The show was televised love via CBS in the States and really helped to put Manila back in the limelight for something positive.
If you think it is not a big thing here watch the video below and have a big smile.
